The elevator materials arrive at the site on the scheduled date. The installation team shows up the next day, but nothing happens for two weeks because the lift shaft is still being plastered and the three-phase connection is stuck somewhere at the electricity office. Most delays with elevator projects happen like this: all equipment and installers are ready, but the site is not. It is coordination and not production that makes Indian projects miss their deadlines, and all you have to do to improve coordination is spend nothing. Elevator installation delays do not happen due to a spectacular failure. They happen because of small mistakes: for instance, the mason has left the opening for the lift shaft forty millimetres narrower than supposed to be on one of the floors; scaffolding is blocking the rail line for the elevator installer; or the promised storage space for the equipment near the lift shaft became a cement depot.
This is why elevator project coordination deserves the same attention as the civil programme itself. The lift is the one item in your building that four different parties touch: the builder, the electrical contractor, the lift installer and the Inspector of Lifts. Nobody controls all four unless someone is made to.

Good elevator project management at this level is unglamorous. It is confirming that the plasterer finishes the shaft before the scaffold comes down, that the electrician’s cable route reaches the machine area before wiring week, and that elevator project scheduling appears on the main construction programme rather than living in a separate file nobody opens. Elevator construction coordination gets harder as the building gets taller, because the lift and the structure are built in parallel rather than in sequence.
